Shawn Mendes Album Release
Make A Hit.
Connecting fans with music through gaming
Universal Music Group launched pop star Shawn Mendes’ much-anticipated fourth album Wonder in December 2020. On the day of the release, Universal wanted to surprise Mendes’ young fanbase with an imaginative and interactive way for fans to experience the album, since a concert tour was no longer possible. Through a gamified virtual environment, fans were taken through a 360-degree, 3D wonderland adventure with the goal of connecting fans to the album’s ethos in a fresh new way.

Solution
InVision worked with Ingenuity Studios, AG Artists, and Universal Music Group to bring the Wonder platform to life. We crafted the architecture and interactivity for the game, turning Ingenuity’s art visuals and 3D animations into real-time interactive objects.
Game interactivity design: the game began with fans exploring Shawn Mendes’ studio apartment to find mysterious portals that led them to one of six wondrous realms. Each realm’s environment was uniquely designed to immerse fans into the album’s underlying themes, while playing racks from the album.
Gamification: throughout the game, fans collected Wonder lyric cards and flying swallows for points. Players who collected them all received exclusive access to the entire gallery illustrated Wonder cards.
Music tie-in: the game seamlessly integrated with Spotify to cue up the tracks chosen specifically for each of the animated worlds.
Result
Fans everywhere buzzed with excitement on Twitter and Instagram. The release generated substantial impressions on Shawn Mendes’ social accounts, including over 780,000 views on Instagram for the game and over 37,000 likes on Twitter and 5,500+ retweets.
